LAHORE: In a high-voltage T20 clash, Multan Sultans edged past Islamabad United by 5 wickets, thanks largely to a match-defining innings from John Philippe.
Islamabad United set a competitive total of 175-5 in their 20 overs, but their innings began on shaky ground.
Openers Shahzad Farhan and Faheem Ashraf fell cheaply for 2 and 3 runs, leaving United struggling early on.
Steve Smith tried to anchor the innings, scoring a composed 31 off 21 balls, while Saimon Ishad and John Philippe countered with valuable contributions of 55 and 56 runs respectively.
Shahid Mehmood provided some late fireworks, hitting a quick 21, but United ultimately fell just short of what could have been a match-winning total.
Extras and disciplined bowling from Multan Sultans’ Richard Gleeson and Mohammad Nawaz also played a role in keeping United’s score in check.
Chasing 176, Multan Sultans started cautiously under the pressure of early wickets, with Gleeson and Nawaz striking to put the chase on edge.
But John Philippe’s calm yet assertive approach at the crease steadied the innings. He built critical partnerships with Saimon Ishad, who scored 29, and Shahid Khan, who added 21, rotating the strike efficiently and punishing loose deliveries.
Despite occasional tight overs from Islamabad’s Peter Siddle and Mohammad Wasim Jr, Philippe kept the scoreboard moving, balancing aggression with composure.
Philippe’s match-winning 55, coupled with crucial support from his partners, guided Multan Sultans to 176-5 in 20 overs, securing a thrilling 5-wicket victory.
The encounter highlighted how one pivotal innings, backed by sharp partnerships and disciplined bowling, can swing a T20 game and leave fans on the edge of their seats until the very last ball.
