N Korea fires multiple suspected ballistic missiles off east coast

TOKYO: North Korea fired at least ten suspected ballistic missiles toward the sea off its east coast on March 14, South Korean officials said. The Japan Coast Guard also reported a possible missile launch, noting that the projectiles likely fell outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone.

The launches come amid heightened tensions following joint military drills by South Korea and the United States. Discussions on reopening dialogue with Pyongyang were recently held in Washington between South Korean leaders and former US President Donald Trump, though negotiations between the US and North Korea have remained stalled since 2019.

Japan’s Prime Minister’s office confirmed the missile activity, emphasising that immediate safety measures have been ordered for aircraft, vessels, and other assets. The office also pledged to maintain transparent communication with the public regarding contingencies and safety precautions.
