ISLAMABAD: Incidents of WhatsApp account hijacking have seen a sharp increase in Pakistan, prompting the National Emergency Response Team (National CERT) to issue a nationwide alert.
According to National CERT, cybercriminals are taking over accounts using fake calls, phishing links, one-time passwords (OTPs), and QR codes. The alert warned that both individual and business accounts are at serious risk.
Attackers often pose as the social media platform support staff, telecom employees, or even acquaintances to steal sensitive information. Once an account is hijacked, it can be misused for fraud, fake messages, and financial scams.
Suspicious logouts, unknown linked devices, and unsolicited OTPs are key signs of account compromise.
National CERT advised users not to share WhatsApp codes, PINs, or QR codes with anyone. Two-step verification and a recovery email have been recommended to secure accounts. Affected users should immediately reinstall WhatsApp, re-verify their number, and report any suspicious activity.
