LAHORE: Pakistan hockey has been plunged into controversy after players of the Pakistan men’s national field hockey team openly rebelled against team management upon their return from Australia.

The national side arrived back in Lahore after competing in the FIH Pro League, but celebrations were replaced by strong criticism and public frustration. Speaking to the media at the airport alongside his teammates, captain Imad Butt leveled serious allegations against the management.

“The team management has lied to us. We cannot work with the current management,” the captain stated. He appealed directly to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the Field Marshal to take immediate notice of the situation.

Despite the off-field turmoil, Imad Butt defended his squad’s performance. “Given the circumstances in which my team performed, it is a big achievement. I am satisfied with the performance of my team,” he said.

The captain further revealed troubling details about the conditions faced by the players during the tour. According to him, team members were forced to prepare their own breakfast and wash their own dishes. “How will a player perform when he does not get proper rest?” he questioned, highlighting the physical and mental toll such arrangements can take on professional athletes.

He also called for structural reforms in Pakistan hockey, urging authorities to bring in educated and meritorious individuals to improve governance. While acknowledging that “some bitter words were exchanged,” he maintained that abuse or inappropriate behavior from management was unacceptable.

Following the public outcry, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif took swift notice of the matter and ordered an immediate inquiry. A spokesperson for the Pakistan Sports Board confirmed that an investigation has been launched on the Prime Minister’s instructions to determine responsibility.

The Prime Minister reportedly made it clear that there would be no compromise on the honor, dignity, and facilities of the national team, directing authorities to take strict action if negligence or mismanagement is proven.

Sources have since revealed that the team was allegedly provided substandard accommodation during its Australian tour. Players were reportedly housed three to a small room, arrangements described as far below international standards and a matter of serious concern.

The incident has once again raised broader questions about administrative shortcomings in Pakistan hockey and whether meaningful reforms will follow this latest controversy.
