ISLAMABAD: National Commission on the Status of Women (NCSW) Chairperson Nilofar Bakhtiar held a meeting with a civil society delegation from Gilgit-Baltistan to take up the case of Falak Noor, who was earlier abducted and forced her to solemnize Nikah with a minor boy.
Falak Noor was earlier presented before a court in Gilgit after she was recovered from the custody of her abductors.
Following the briefing from the delegation, Bakhtiar urged immediate support for the delegation and called upon the G-B chief secretary and IG police to take swift action.
Expressing dismay over child marriages, Bakhtiar announced plans to visit Gilgit-Baltistan to advocate for the enactment of the Child Marriage Act and establish a regional women’s commission.
In pursuit of justice for Falak Noor, Bakhtiar demanded the appointment of an independent medical board to conduct a comprehensive examination, assessing both physical and mental well-being, and verifying her age through appropriate tests.
Additionally, Bakhtiar pressed for an inquiry into the conduct of the Danyore police station house officer and Superintendent of Police Gilgit city, stressing the need for civil and criminal proceedings if misconduct or negligence is found.
Highlighting broader issues of child abuse and violence in Danyore’s jurisdiction, Bakhtiar urged the Gilgit Baltistan Chief Secretary to initiate a thorough investigation and take decisive action against any facilitating networks.
These proactive measures underscore NCSW’s commitment to protecting women and children, affirming a zero-tolerance policy towards gender-based violence.
