The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a cautionary alert, signaling a hazardous surge in air pollution in Islamabad capital and its environs.
According to the alert, citizens in Islamabad are advised to be vigilant as the Air Quality Index (AQI) has spiked to 240. The PM2.5 concentration in Islamabad currently stands at 37.9 times the annual air quality guideline value set by the World Health Organization (WHO).
Rawalpindi records an AQI value of 270, while Lahore follows closely with a reading of 185.
In response to the escalating air pollution in Islamabad, NDMA recommends that citizens wear masks and curtail outdoor activities to mitigate health risks.
Emphasizing the urgency of the situation, NDMA urges citizens to take precautionary measures, including the use of masks and staying hydrated, amidst the deteriorating air quality.
Due to the rising pollution and no rains, influenza cases have increased.
Patients with chronic diseases such as asthma, diabetes, cardiac and lung diseases, pregnant women, elderly people and children under five years are at higher risk of developing severe or complicated diseases.
Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department forecasts cold and dry conditions in Islamabad and adjacent areas.
Across most plains in the country, cold and dry weather is expected. West Balochistan may experience rain, with anticipated snowfall in mountainous regions.
Additionally, heavy fog envelops various regions in Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Upper Sindh.
