NDMA weather alert: Heavy rain and snow expected, as Lahore sees light rain

LAHORE: Light rain and drizzle were reported across Lahore today, with the Met Department recording a temperature of 14°C, expected to fall to 10°C over the next few days.

According to weather updates, key areas of Lahore, including Mason Road, Riaz Colony, Lawrence Road, and China Chowk, experienced drizzles and light rain later in the day.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a weather alert warning of heavy rain and snowfall across the country over the next two days. Authorities caution that hilly and mountainous regions are particularly at risk of landslides due to these adverse weather conditions.

Landslide alerts

Several districts in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province are expected to experience landslides, including Dir, Swat, Kalam, Kaghan, Chitral, Kohistan, Shangla, Abbottabad, and Mansehra.

Similarly, many regions in Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan are at risk, including Murree, Galyat, Astore, Skardu, Gilgit, Hunza, Ghizer, Shigar, Bagh, and Muzaffarabad.

In Balochistan, landslide warnings have been issued for Quetta, Ziarat, Pishin, Chaman, Qila Abdullah, Noshki, Harnai, Zhob, Qila Saifullah, Qalat, Mastung, Awaran, Panjgur, and Khuzdar.

The NDMA has also warned that major roads, including the Karakoram Highway, Babusar Road, and Kaghan-Naran route, could be blocked due to landslides. Citizens are advised to avoid unnecessary travel and remain indoors during rain and snowfall.

Emergency teams and debris-clearing machinery have been put on alert to restore traffic if roads are blocked. Authorities emphasise that the public should follow NDMA safety instructions and exercise caution in hilly and mountainous areas.
