NEPRA jacks up prices by Rs.4.56 per unit

The National Electric Power  Regularity Authority (NEPRA) sanctioned yet another increase in electricity tariffs, instituting a quarterly modification of Rs1.7432 per unit for the upcoming three months.

ISLAMABAD: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has greenlit a surge in power tariffs, pegging an additional burden of Rs 4.56 per unit on consumers’ bills for February 2024.

This uptick comes in response to fuel cost adjustments (FCA) from December 2023, spelling out more strain for the already cash-strapped public.

The decision applies across the board to all consumer categories, except Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (EVCS) and Lifeline consumers, NEPRA announced in a notification.

In December 2023, the government’s reduced production of electricity from renewable and cost-effective sources has hit the consumers’ pockets hard.

This underutilization of these resources played a pivotal role in driving up costs, leading to the present surge in tariffs.

With an estimated financial burden of approximately Rs 33.88 billion, which could balloon to nearly Rs 40 billion when considering the 18% General Sales Tax (GST), consumers brace for a heavier load on their pockets.

This hike in power tariffs is poised to exacerbate the financial woes of consumers already grappling with rising living costs, posing yet another challenge for the common man’s household budgets.
