Netflix orders sequel to hit Norwegian movie ‘Troll’

NORWAY: Streaming giant Netflix has officially greenlit a sequel to the Norwegian action-adventure movie Troll.

According to Variety, the sequel was directed by Roar Uthaug, known for helming Norway’s first thriller movie The Wave.

The sequel, named Troll 2 reunites Uthaug, acclaimed for his work on Tomb Raider, with writer Espen Aukan and producers Espen Horn and Kristian Strand Sinkerud at Motion Blur, the Oslo-based production company behind notable titles such as Cadaver, Amundsen, and The 12th Man.

The original Troll movie delves into the aftermath of an explosion in the Norwegian mountains, awakening an ancient troll. The narrative follows a courageous paleontologist on a quest to thwart the troll’s destructive rampage. The ensemble cast featured Ine Marie Wilmann, Kim Falck, Mads Pettersen, and Gard B. Eidsvold.

Premiering globally on Netflix in 2022, Troll swiftly soared to the top as the streaming platform’s most-watched non-English movie of all time, amassing an astonishing 103 million views in its initial 91 days, as reported by Netflix.

The epic production also claimed a spot in the Top 10 across 93 countries and secured the number one position in Norway, the United States, and the United Kingdom.

Roar Uthaug expressed his joy, stating, “Making Troll was a lifelong dream come true, and the reception our Norwegian movie has received around the world has been unbelievable.”

Espen Horn and Kristian Strand Sinkerud shared their enthusiasm for the upcoming project, confirming that Troll 2 will once again revolve around a Norwegian fairy tale character and maintain an all-Norwegian creative team in both acting and production. Filming for the sequel is slated to commence in 2024.

Netflix’s portfolio of original Norwegian content continues to expand, featuring notable series such as Salmon Island (working title) by the creators of the popular crime comedy series Lilyhammer, Anne Bjørnstad and Eilif Skodvin, alongside productions like Royalteen by Per-Olav Sørensen, Ragnarok, War Sailor, and Royalteen: Princess Margrethe.
