Netflix has confirmed a sequel to KPop Demon Hunters after the animated hit shattered streaming records and became the platform’s most watched movie ever.
The announcement was made on social media, with the streaming giant revealing that the follow-up film will reunite directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans.
No release date has been announced yet for the sequel.
Record-breaking success for the Netflix hit
According to Netflix, KPop Demon Hunters generated more than 480 million views in just six months, making it the most watched movie in the platform’s history.
The film follows members of fictional K-pop group Huntr/x, Rumi, Mira and Zoey, who secretly battle supernatural forces while navigating global fame.
Since its release last summer, the animated film has grown into a global cultural phenomenon.
Hit song ‘Golden’ also made history
The movie’s breakout track ‘Golden’ also made waves in the music industry.
The song won a Grammy for best song written for visual media, marking the first time a K-pop song has won in that category.
The track was performed and co-written by Ejae, who provides the singing voice for the character Rumi.
Creators promise more stories in the sequel
Director Maggie Kang said she feels proud that audiences want to see more stories from the world of KPop Demon Hunters.
She described the sequel as an opportunity to expand the characters and explore more elements of Korean culture.
The filmmakers have also hinted that the next instalment could introduce new musical styles while expanding the mythology surrounding the demon-hunting idols.
Awards buzz continues
The sequel announcement comes as KPop Demon Hunters continues to gain awards attention.
The film has already won best animated motion picture and best original song at the Golden Globes and is currently nominated for best animated feature at the upcoming Oscars.
When the sequel will release
Netflix has not confirmed a release date for the KPop Demon Hunters sequel.
However, the original film reportedly took several years to develop, meaning the follow-up project could still be some time away.
