COLOMBO: In the 49th match of the Super Eights, New Zealand opted to bat first against England and posted a competitive total of 159/7 in 20 overs, setting a target of 160 for the visitors at the R. Premadasa Stadium.
The Black Caps got off to a flying start, scoring 64 runs in the opening overs, but lost their first wicket soon after and had to rebuild. Tim Seifert led the charge with a composed 35, supported by Finn Allen’s aggressive 29. Glenn Phillips shone with a crucial 39, anchoring the innings.
Towards the end, Mark Chapman contributed 15, Daryl Mitchell scored 3, and captain Mitchell Santner remained unbeaten on 9. Colin de Grandhomme’s late cameo of 14 runs helped New Zealand approach the target in the final over.
For England, Adil Rashid and Will Jacks picked up two wickets each, while Liam Dawson and Rehan Ahmed also claimed two wickets apiece, keeping the New Zealand batsmen under pressure. Jofra Archer, Sam Curran, and Jacob Bethell provided valuable breakthroughs at crucial moments.
