KARACHI: A newlywed bride who had slipped into a coma after allegedly being brutally assaulted by her husband in Karachi’s Lyari area passed away on Wednesday.

According to reports, the victim, Shanti, was under treatment at the Trauma Centre of Civil Hospital after suffering severe injuries in the Shah Baig Lane area of Lyari.

The victim was in a coma and her physical examination findings were “consistent with sexual violence”, police surgeon Dr Summaiya Syed said.

“Ms Shanti, 19, a rape victim, passed away at the Trauma Centre of the Civil Hospital Karachi at 10:45am today,” Syed said.

Police said that she had been in critical condition following the violent assault.

The police added that Shanti had married Ashok on June 15, and the incident of violence took place just two days later on June 17. The accused had allegedly mutilated several parts of her body, leaving her in a life-threatening condition.

Baghdadi police had arrested the suspect Ashok, and a case was registered against him on the complaint of the victim’s brother. The accused has since been sent to jail by the court.
