NHMP to impose heavy penalties on violations

ISLAMABAD: In a move to enhance road safety, National Highway and Motorway Police (NHMP) has announced an escalation in penalties for drivers caught using mobile phones and those not wearing seatbelts .

The revised fines are set to take effect from January 1, 2024.

The official account of the Motorway Police disseminated this update via the social media platform X.

Under the new regulations, hefty fines will be imposed on individuals caught using mobile phones while driving on all National Highways and Motorways falling under the jurisdiction of the National Highways and Motorway Police.

Motorcyclists will now face a fine of Rs 500, while the fines for cars and light vehicles (LTV) have been raised to Rs 2000. Notably, the penalty for buses and trucks (HTV) has been significantly increased to Rs 5000.

This marks a substantial increase from the previous fine amount of Rs 300.

The NHMP has also announced fines for those who will not be wearing seatbelts on national highways and motorways.

According to the announcement, light vehicles (LTV) drivers will be imposed a fine of 1500 for not wearing seat belts while HTV drivers will be fined Rs 3000.

These substantial steps taken by the NHMP signals the Motorway Police’s commitment to promoting responsible driving habits and ensuring the safety of all road users.

 National Highway and Motorway Police have also enhanced fines on various violations including over speeding overloading, wrong loading, overtaking, one-wheeling, driving without a helmet and hindering smooth movement of emergency vehicles.
