ISLAMABAD: As the country remains in the grip of a cold and dry spell, most areas are experiencing chilly temperatures with fog lingering in the plains.

Unfortunately, there’s no relief in sight as the weather forecast indicates no chances of rain in the near future.

Karachi, the bustling metropolis, recently shivered through its coldest night this winter, with temperatures dropping by two points.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) reported a minimum temperature of 10 degrees Celsius in the city with no near chances of rain.

Gentle northeast winds at a speed of two kilometres per hour add to the chilly atmosphere.

Temperature likely to drop to single digit in coming days in Karachi

The upcoming days in Karachi are expected to bring more cold weather, with the mercury likely to dip into the single digits, according to the Met Office.

Moving towards Balochistan, the Meteorological Department predicts cold and dry conditions in most districts. Kalat recorded a minimum temperature of minus 4 degrees Celsius, while Sibi, Nokundi, and Turbat reported temperatures of 8, 6, and 12 degrees Celsius, respectively.

Looking ahead, Director General of the Meteorological Department, Mehr Sahibzada Khan, anticipates a change in the weather. He announced the possibility of rains in the last week of January, extending into February. This forecast includes expectations of rains and snow during the upcoming elections.

Highlighting the unusual weather patterns, DG Meteorological Department mentioned that the year 2023 was the hottest globally, and December marked the driest spell in 22 years. He emphasized that the current cold wave is likely to persist for some time.

In other major cities this morning, temperatures recorded were Islamabad and Peshawar at 1 degrees Celsius, Lahore at 5 degrees Celsius, Quetta at -2 degrees Celsius, Gilgit at -4 degrees Celsius, Murree at 1 degree Celsius, and Muzaffarabad at 3 degrees Celsius.
