PESHAWAR: The recently announced results of the matriculation examinations across eight education boards in the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) shows that no student from government schools managed to secure the top position in any of these boards.
This shortfall in performance has raised questions about the quality of education in government-run institutions in the province.
The top three positions in the Abbottabad Board were clinched by students hailing from private schools. Similarly, in Bannu Board, Javed Khan, a student from a private school, emerged as the topper with 1,056 marks. The DI Khan Board was topped by Saira Bibi and Dua Zainab from private educational institutions.
These developments shed light on the disparity between public and private education standards and practices.
The Kohat Board saw Syed Adnan Raza from Cadet College Kohat securing the first position. The Mardan Board’s top position was secured by a student from Girls Cadet College.

In the Malakand Board, Muhammad Farooq, a student of a private educational institution, clinched the top spot. Adan Shahid, achieving a score of 1,086 marks, emerged as the topper in the Peshawar Education Board. Jawad Aslam achieved the highest marks in the Education Board Swat exams. These students also hail from private educational institutions.
The disappointing performance of government school students has prompted the education department to take action but it will be interesting to see if these actions include concrete steps instead of topical solutions like merely issuing harshly worded letters.
The situation underscores the urgency to address the challenges faced by the government schools and to bridge the gap compared to private schools in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
