TEHRAN: The Norwegian Nobel Committee has urged Iranian authorities to immediately release Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi, following her recent arrest. Describing her detention as “brutal,” the committee called on Iran to ensure her safety and integrity and to grant her immediate and unconditional freedom.
Mohammadi, a prominent human rights activist who was awarded the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize for her long-standing fight for women’s rights and freedom in Iran, was detained by security forces in December 2025 while attending a memorial event in Mashhad.
According to her foundation and family, Mohammadi was violently arrested, beaten, and taken into custody, raising serious international concerns about her well-being.
Authorities have since extended her prison sentence by several years, adding to the lengthy imprisonment she has already faced due to her activism. Supporters say she has launched a hunger strike in protest against her detention and prison conditions.
International human rights organisations, alongside the Nobel Committee, have condemned her arrest and sentencing as violations of fundamental human rights and have renewed calls for her immediate release.
Mohammadi’s case has become a powerful symbol of broader global criticism over Iran’s ongoing crackdown on dissent and civil activism.
