WEB DESK: Narges Mohammadi, the Nobel Peace Prize laureate and prominent human rights defender, has been rushed to a hospital in Zanjan after losing consciousness in prison on Friday.
According to a statement released by her family, the activist collapsed within the prison walls, prompting an emergency transfer to a local medical facility.
Mohammadi is currently being treated in the hospital’s intensive care unit (ICU) as concerns grow regarding her deteriorating health, according to The New York Times.
Urgent pleas for specialist care
Despite her critical condition, Iranian judicial authorities have reportedly denied requests from Ms Mohammadi’s family and legal team to transfer her to a more advanced hospital in Tehran.
Her family has highlighted the need for her to be treated by her long-term cardiologist in the capital, where better-equipped facilities are available.
Her husband, Taghi Rahmani, who lives in exile in Paris, has expressed grave fears for her life, stating that she has collapsed and lost consciousness multiple times.
He described the situation as “urgent” and pleaded for her immediate relocation to a specialist hospital.
Authorities remain silent amid health crisis
While the Nobel laureate’s foundation and her husband continue to call for mercy and immediate medical intervention, official responses have been sparse.
Iran’s mission to the United Nations has declined to comment on Ms Mohammadi’s current medical status or the specific reasons behind her collapse.
The activist, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her tireless fight against the oppression of women in Iran, has faced years of imprisonment and repeated health scares while in custody.
