WEB DESK: North Korea has intensified regional tensions by launching more than ten ballistic missiles into the sea on Saturday, according to reports from the South Korean military. The significant display of force occurred as American and South Korean troops continued large-scale joint military exercises, which Pyongyang has long condemned as a provocation.
According to the Express Tribune, South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff confirmed the missiles were fired from an area near the capital, Pyongyang, at approximately 1:20 p.m. local time, travelling towards the waters off the country’s eastern coast.
Japan’s coast guard also monitored the activity, noting that the projectiles appeared to have landed outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone. This latest volley is part of a decades-long effort by the North to refine its delivery systems for nuclear weapons. Despite being subject to stringent United Nations Security Council sanctions since 2006, the defiant state continues to advance its weaponry, often timing such tests to coincide with allied military activity in the peninsula.
Defensive drills and tactical manoeuvres
The launches took place against the backdrop of annual “purely defensive” drills conducted by Washington and Seoul. On Saturday, hundreds of personnel participated in river-crossing exercises involving heavy hardware, including tanks and armoured combat vehicles. With approximately 28,500 US troops stationed in South Korea, these drills are designed to ensure readiness against potential Northern aggression. However, the North Korean leadership views these manoeuvres as “dress rehearsals” for a full-scale invasion, frequently using missile tests as a formal expression of their displeasure.
Renewed overtures for diplomatic dialogue
The military escalation comes at a complex moment for international diplomacy. Earlier this week, South Korean Prime Minister Kim Min-seok met with US President Donald Trump in Washington to explore avenues for reopening communication channels with Pyongyang. Following the meeting, Prime Minister Kim indicated that President Trump remains eager to secure a high-level sit-down with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. While the White House appears keen to pivot back toward dialogue, the sheer volume of Saturday’s missile launches suggests that the path to the negotiating table remains fraught with significant obstacles.
