COLOMBO: Sri Lanka were defeated by 61 runs in the sixth clash of the Super Eight tonight as New Zealand bowlers played havoc with their ball to defend the team’s 168-run total.
Earlier, the NZ vs SL Eights clash of the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup saw New Zealand post a competitive total of 168, setting up what appeared to be a manageable chase for the co-host Sri Lanka, who failed to execute on their familiarity with home conditions.

Batting first, New Zealand put together a steady innings, finishing at 167-8 in their allotted 20 overs. Despite a solid platform, the NZ were unable to fully accelerate in the death overs, something that could prove decisive given the batting-friendly conditions.
The innings was anchored by key contributions from the middle order. Glenn Phillips led the scoring with a brisk 40, while Daryl Mitchell added 31 to keep the innings on track. Earlier, Finn Allen chipped in with 32, providing early momentum. However, regular wickets prevented New Zealand from building a dominant total.

Sri Lanka’s bowlers delivered a disciplined performance, keeping the scoring rate in check during the first innings. Wanindu Hasaranga was the standout performer for the side ahead of their loss against the NZ, picking up 2 wickets while maintaining control through his spell. Dushmantha Chameera also made crucial breakthroughs, ensuring New Zealand never fully broke free.

However, Sri Lanka failed to chase 168, though backed by both their batting depth and experience in Colombo conditions, but had a bad day to chase the total. All of them were out in the last over at 107, with Kamindu Mendis and Dunith Wellalage remaining the only top batters. Mendis scored 31 while Wellalage managed only 29. The rest, the pitch appeared good for batting, but only in favour of the NZ side, as they looked to hunt the SL all down well beforehand.

Both teams had fielded strong line-ups for this crucial encounter. A win in this match, ensured by NZ, significantly boosted New Zealand’s chances of advancing further in the tournament. Sri Lanka have yet to face off Pakistan on Feb 28 to see the complete status of their team.
New Zealand have shown solid strategic and technical performance in the tournament, giving Santner’s side a competitive edge. Nonetheless, the outcome of the match depended on their discipline, execution, and composure under pressure.
