WASHINGTON: A heated exchange erupted on Twitter between Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) and political commentator Ana Kasparian over US military aid to Israel.
The debate began after AOC posted about a foiled assassination plot targeting Nerdeen Kiswani by a pro-Israel extremist. AOC condemned the attack, calling it “a reprehensible act of political violence” and confirming the suspect was arrested.
Kasparian responded sharply, urging AOC to “vote to send Israel more money for weapons.” AOC fired back, denying the claim. She wrote, “Those checks don’t cash themselves, and you aren’t talented enough to be relevant with the truth,” accusing Kasparian of spreading falsehoods.
Kasparian then posted a detailed rebuttal, acknowledging AOC’s previous “no” votes on arms funding but criticising her for later voting “present” under political pressure. She argued that supporting US-funded arms to Israel enables ongoing atrocities and reminded AOC that taxpayers fund these initiatives.
The exchange escalated when Kasparian’s co-host, Cenk Uygur, weighed in. In his posted message on X, he called for a more forceful stand from AOC against Israeli aggression. Uygur acknowledged past votes by AOC in favour of the Iron Dome and the IHRA definition of antisemitism, but stressed that progressive values require defending free speech and opposing military aid. He urged AOC to take a more active role in fighting the “establishment” and supporting anti-war advocacy.
The online spat highlights tensions within progressive circles over US foreign policy toward Israel and raises questions about how lawmakers balance political pressure, advocacy, and public accountability.
