LAHORE: Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) Chairman Masroor Khan has hinted at the likelihood of a surge in gas tariff in the country in coming days.
Speaking at a public hearing in Lahore, he said that gas prices were going up worldwide and Pakistan can also witness a surge in gas prices.
All stakeholders presented their concerns to the OGRA chairman during the public hearing.
Masroor Khan said that the Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited has formally proposed an additional 131% increase in gas tariff following an earlier hike that took effect on November 1.
The OGRA chairman having considered the viewpoints of all stakeholders, announced that the next hearing will take place in Peshawar. Subsequently, he said the recommendations will be submitted to the government for further action.
While noting that the government ultimately determines any changes in gas prices, Masroor Khan emphasized that consumer interests remain a top priority for OGRA.
Residents of posh areas enjoy consistent gas pressure, while poor suffer
He urged consumers to adopt gas-saving practices, citing his personal efforts in managing his household gas bills through conservation measures.
Highlighting the challenges faced by OGRA, Masroor Khan explained that the country’s gas reserves were currently low and continue to deplete.
As a result, the government has to import expensive gas particularly the RLNG, which puts an additional burden on consumers.
The OGRA chairman emphasized the importance of addressing these challenges to ensure the sustainability of the gas supply while considering the economic impact on the citizens.
