Oppenheimer leads Oscars with 13 nominations

BEVERLY HILLS: Christopher Nolan’s epic ‘Oppenheimer’ is leading in the Oscars nomination list released on Tuesday, in thirteen categories.

The Oscars, also known as Academy Awards, are regarded as the most prestigious awards within the film industry. It recently unveiled the nominations for its 2024 edition.

The historical movie delves into the life of American theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, often referred to as the ‘father of the atomic bomb’. The film secured nominations in several prestigious categories, including best picture, best actor for Cillian Murphy, best supporting actress for Emily Blunt, best supporting actor for Robert Downey Jr, best director for Christopher Nolan, best adapted screenplay, best original score, best costume design, best make-up and hairstyling, best production design, best sound, best film editing, and best cinematography.

Meanwhile, the Margot Robbie-starrer ‘Barbie’ clinched eight nominations. The film earned nominations in categories such as best picture, best supporting actress, best supporting actor, best adapted screenplay, best original song, best costume design, and best production design. The movie secured two nominations in the best original song category.

Among other contenders, ‘Poor Things’ emerged as runner-up with eleven nominations. ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ came in third place with ten nominations, while ‘Maestro’ secured seven nominations.

Greta Gerwig, the director of ‘Barbie’, made history by becoming the first woman to have directed three best picture-nominated movies – ‘Barbie’, ‘Little Women’, and ‘Lady Bird’. This year also witnessed three best picture-nominated movies that were directed by women – ‘Anatomy of a Fall’, ‘Past Lives’, and ‘Barbie’.

The 96th Academy Awards are scheduled to be held on March 10, 2024.
