Oreo has unveiled its first ever zero sugar chocolate sandwich cookie, and the internet is already divided over whether the bold move is a step forward or a risky gamble.
The limited edition Oreo Zero Sugar cookies will launch in January 2026 in two versions: Original and Double Stuf. The product will be sold in a new stand-up pouch designed for on-the-go snacking, with a listed price of $5.79.
Unlike classic Oreos, which use cane sugar, the new cookies are sweetened with a blend of sugar substitutes, including maltitol, polydextrose, sucralose and acesulfame potassium. The product will be aspartame-free.
Oreo has positioned the release as part of its ongoing innovation push following years of viral limited-edition flavours, including celebrity collaborations. However, reaction to the zero sugar version has been mixed, with some fans welcoming a lower-sugar option and others questioning the taste and health impact.
Why the launch is raising questions
Nutrition experts quoted in early reviews have warned that some artificial sweeteners can cause digestive discomfort and may affect gut health if consumed in large quantities. Others argue that sugar-free desserts still belong in the same moderation category as traditional sweets.
Despite the debate, industry analysts say Oreo’s decision taps into growing consumer demand for low-sugar alternatives, especially among younger shoppers focused on fitness and lifestyle trends.
The brand has not yet confirmed whether the zero sugar range will expand beyond the initial two flavours. For now, the controversial cookies are set to arrive in stores at the start of 2026, with fans and critics alike waiting to see whether Oreo’s latest experiment becomes a surprise hit or a short-lived curiosity.
