Pakistan and China to bolster security and investment ties following high-level talks

WEB DESK: In a significant step to reinforce the longstanding “All-Weather Strategic Cooperative Partnership”, Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi visited the Chinese Embassy in Islamabad’s Diplomatic Enclave for high-level discussions with Ambassador Jiang Zaidong.

The talks focused on deepening counter-terrorism cooperation and enhancing security arrangements for Chinese nationals working across Pakistan, reflecting Islamabad’s continued prioritisation of safety for foreign partners engaged in strategic projects, according to the Express Tribune.

Marking what officials describe as a new phase of protection and economic coordination, the Interior Minister announced the establishment of a Special Protection Unit (SPU) dedicated to safeguarding foreign nationals, particularly Chinese citizens in the capital.

A new era of protection and economic synergy

The initiative includes specialised training for personnel, notably in the Chinese language, to facilitate effective communication and operational coordination.

Alongside security measures, both sides agreed to convene a comprehensive business conference aimed at streamlining investment flows.

The initiative will proceed in two phases: first, direct consultations with Chinese enterprises already operating in Pakistan, and second, targeted outreach to prospective investors seeking entry into the market.

This diplomatic engagement follows a recent meeting between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Ambassador Jiang, where both sides reaffirmed their commitment to advancing China-Pakistan Economic Corridor Phase II.

The next stage of the corridor is expected to focus on agricultural modernisation, industrial expansion, and the upgrading of critical infrastructure.

As Pakistan and China near the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations, the emphasis remains on fostering regional stability while pursuing a reform-driven agenda designed to attract sustained global investment.
