WEB DESK: Pakistan has assumed the presidency of the United Nations Conference on Disarmament (CD) in Geneva, with Ambassador Tahir Hussain Andrabi chairing the Conference’s meetings on behalf of Pakistan.
The Foreign Office spokesperson said Pakistan has also started consultations with former presidents of the Conference and representatives of regional groups.
Pakistan is presiding over the final session of the Conference for 2026, which will conclude its annual proceedings under the country’s leadership.
The Conference will discuss its annual report and hold negotiations on the relevant resolution at the UN General Assembly’s First Committee during Pakistan’s presidency.
The UN Conference on Disarmament comprises 65 member states, including all nuclear-armed states, and serves as the world’s sole multilateral forum for negotiations on disarmament and arms control treaties.
Ending the nuclear arms race, preventing nuclear war and preventing the weaponisation of outer space are among the key issues on the Conference’s agenda.
The Conference has also contributed to major international treaties concerning biological and chemical weapons and the comprehensive ban on nuclear testing.
The Foreign Office said Pakistan’s presidency reflects the international community’s confidence in the country and further highlights its diplomatic role in global arms control, disarmament, peace and security discussions.
