WEB DESK: Pakistan has once again urged the international community to prioritise diplomacy over arms, calling for an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine and a return to “structured, meaningful negotiations.”

Addressing a high-level briefing of the UN Security Council on Monday, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, warned that there is no military solution to the conflict, which has now entered its fifth year.

According to APP, the Ambassador expressed grave concern over the mounting humanitarian toll and the destruction of civilian infrastructure, stressing that a just and lasting peace can only be achieved through political will and adherence to the principles of the UN Charter.

A plea for de-escalation and diplomacy

Ambassador Ahmad emphasised that the “logical and necessary” first step towards stability is an urgent cessation of hostilities.

He noted that while the world’s attention is increasingly fractured by multiple global crises, the situation in Ukraine remains a significant threat to international peace and security.

Pakistan’s stance remains rooted in a balanced approach, advocating for a settlement that respects international law while taking into account the legitimate security interests of all parties involved.

The Ambassador concluded by urging the Security Council to move beyond rhetoric and foster a genuine environment for dialogue, asserting that the human cost of continued warfare has become “unbearable.”
