Former cricketer Aqib Javed has acknowledged that Pakistan’s performance at the recent ICC Cricket World Cup fell short of expectations, saying the national team had hoped to at least reach the semi-finals.

Speaking about the campaign, Javed said the team had been optimistic heading into the tournament but ultimately failed to perform at the level required.

“We were hopeful about the World Cup, but the results were not good. The team should have at least reached the semi-finals,” he said, adding that Pakistan did not deliver the level of performance it was capable of.

Despite the disappointing outcome, he said the Pakistan national cricket team remains determined to improve and deliver stronger performances in future tournaments.

Selection, injuries and future planning

Javed said discussions about the team’s strategy had taken place with the coaching staff during the series against England national cricket team, during which it was indicated that there were no immediate plans to change the 15-member squad.

However, he noted that ahead of the series against Bangladesh national cricket team, a pool of 20 players had been considered as part of preparations.

He also revealed that star batter Babar Azam missed the Bangladesh and T20 series due to injury, while an inquiry is being conducted into the fitness status of Fakhar Zaman.

Javed emphasised that the playing XI is determined by the captain and coach, adding that selectors do not interfere in match-day decisions.

“We have no role in deciding the playing XI. It is up to the captain and coach to choose their team,” he said, noting that players are not selected solely on the basis of one tournament performance.

Focus on squad depth and development

Former captain Sarfaraz Ahmed said Pakistan is building depth in key positions, particularly wicketkeeping, as the team looks for long-term options alongside Mohammad Rizwan.

He added that several wicketkeepers are currently in the pipeline and the management is assessing players who can also contribute strongly with the bat.

According to Sarfaraz, all players will be called in over the next three to four months to evaluate their performances and determine the best combination for upcoming assignments.

Meanwhile, former captain Misbah-ul-Haq stressed the need for collective effort within the management and said the goal is to ensure the captain and coach get the team they want.

“Mistakes have happened, but we must focus on moving forward,” Misbah said, expressing hope that improved coordination among management and selectors will strengthen Pakistan’s performances going ahead.
