WEB DESK: Pakistan and Egypt have officially launched the ‘Thunder-II’ bilateral military exercise, a fortnight-long initiative aimed at bolstering counter-terrorism capabilities and deepening the strategic partnership between the two nations.
The two-week exercise commenced on 6 April 2026 at the Special Operations School in Cherat, Pakistan. The opening ceremony was attended by elite contingents from the Pakistan Army’s Special Services Group (SSG) and the Egyptian Special Forces, according to Radio Pakistan.
Gracing the occasion as the chief guest, the Commandant of the Special Operations School formally inaugurated the proceedings, marking another significant milestone in the longstanding military-to-military relationship between Islamabad and Cairo.
Strengthening interoperability and tactical expertise
The primary objective of Thunder-II is to refine the professional skills of the participating troops through rigorous joint training modules.
By simulating complex real-world scenarios, the exercise allows both special forces units to synchronise their operational procedures and enhance their tactical interoperability.
The collaboration focuses heavily on modern counter-terrorism techniques, ensuring that both armies remain adept at neutralizing evolving security threats in their respective regions.
Fostering bilateral defence ties
Beyond the immediate tactical gains, the exercise serves as a vital platform for the exchange of mutual experiences and specialized expertise.
This engagement underscores the robust diplomatic and defence foundations shared by Pakistan and Egypt, reflecting a mutual commitment to regional stability.
As the troops undergo intensive drills over the coming days, the shared knowledge gained in Cherat is expected to further solidify the professional bonds and fraternal ties between the two friendly armed forces.
