WEB DESK: The Government of Pakistan has extended its deepest condolences and heartfelt sympathies to the people and Government of Ethiopia following the catastrophic loss of life and widespread destruction caused by recent floods and landslides.
In an official statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Pakistan expressed its profound grief over the mounting death toll in southern Ethiopia, where torrential rains have triggered mudslides that buried entire villages.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved families and those who have lost their livelihoods in this natural calamity,” the statement read, affirming that Pakistan stands in firm solidarity with its “Ethiopian brothers and sisters” during this challenging period.
A growing humanitarian crisis
The disaster, which struck the Gamo Zone in southern Ethiopia earlier this month, has claimed at least 80 lives, with the number of casualties expected to rise as search and rescue operations continue in remote, mud-clogged terrains. Local authorities report that thousands have been displaced, and critical infrastructure, including roads and bridges, has been swept away. The Ethiopian government has declared a period of national mourning, as emergency teams struggle to reach isolated communities cut off by the rising waters.
Strengthening bilateral support
Pakistan has reiterated its readiness to provide support and assistance to the Ethiopian relief efforts. This gesture of support follows a period of increasingly close diplomatic and environmental cooperation between Islamabad and Addis Ababa.
Both nations have recently collaborated on climate resilience projects, acknowledging that they are both on the front lines of the global climate crisis. Officials in Islamabad indicated that they remain in close contact with Ethiopian authorities to determine the specific nature of aid required to assist in the recovery and rehabilitation of the affected regions.
