Pakistan hockey team gets Abu Bakar as new captain ahead of World Cup

WEB DESK: Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) has announced a major leadership change ahead of the FIH Hockey World Cup, appointing Abu Bakar as the new captain of the national team in place of Imad Shakeel Butt.

According to the federation, Abu Bakar will lead Pakistan in upcoming international assignments. The decision was taken by PHF President Mohyuddin Ahmed Wani on the recommendation of the Professional Development Committee.

PHF said Imad Butt will continue to be part of the national squad as a senior player and will contribute towards the team’s progress.

Abu Bakar will take charge as captain for the first time during Pakistan’s home series against South Korea, beginning on July 30.

The federation expressed confidence that the new captain, along with the experience of senior players and the potential of young talent, will help the national team emerge as a more balanced and united side.

The leadership change comes as Pakistan intensifies preparations for the FIH Hockey World Cup, scheduled to begin on August 15 in the Netherlands and Belgium.

Sixteen teams will compete in the global event, divided into four groups. Pakistan has been placed in Pool D alongside England, Wales, and arch-rivals India.

The much-awaited Pakistan-India clash is scheduled for August 19.
