HAMBURG: The Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP) has floated an international tender to procure 100,000 metric tons of long-grain white rice for onward supply to Bangladesh, European traders confirmed on Monday.

A news report by Business Recorder said that the move comes as Bangladesh continues to issue a series of import tenders aimed at stabilising domestic rice prices.

According to traders, the TCP has invited price offers until November 28, with bids required to remain valid for 21 working days after submission. The tender specifies that the contracted rice must be ready for shipment within 45 calendar days of the award, an indication that both countries are seeking swift execution to meet Bangladesh’s rising food-security needs.

This tender follows Bangladesh’s announcement of yet another rice import tender earlier the same day, adding to its recent flurry of procurement efforts driven by concerns over local supply shortages and inflationary pressures in the food market.

Market analysts say Pakistan’s tender could signal an effort to diversify Bangladesh’s import sources. In recent weeks, traders have expected Bangladesh to rely heavily on Indian-origin rice for some of its earlier purchases, but Islamabad’s participation may open the door for a larger share of Pakistani rice in Dhaka’s import basket.

Pakistan, one of the world’s leading rice exporters, has seen strong demand for its long-grain varieties in African, Middle Eastern and now increasingly South Asian markets. For Bangladesh, expanding its supplier base carries added importance as global food prices fluctuate and climate-related disruptions threaten regional agricultural outputs.

Further details on delivery schedules and quality specifications are expected once the bidding process concludes.
