LAUDERHILL, FLORIDA: Pakistan’s hopes in the T20 World Cup 2024 were dashed on Friday after the United States vs Ireland match was abandoned due to a wet outfield at the Central Broward Regional Park.
Persistent rain left the groundstaff working tirelessly to dry the field, but a downpour following the umpires’ inspection sealed the match’s fate.
The USA, having made a strong start to the tournament, won their opener against Canada and subsequently defeated Pakistan last week. This no-result grants both the US and Ireland one point each, propelling the Americans into the Super 8 with five points.

Ireland, on the other hand, struggled throughout the tournament. They faced defeats against India and Canada before the washout. Pakistan, having lost to both the USA and India, saw their exit confirmed with this abandoned match. Despite one remaining fixture against Ireland, it will be a dead rubber for the Green Shirts.
India, alongside the USA, advanced from Group A, while Pakistan, Ireland, and Canada are set to return home after their group matches.
In previous tournaments, Pakistan had a commendable track record. They reached the semi-finals in 2021 and the final in 2022, showcasing their resilience and competitive spirit. Pakistan has made it to the T20 World Cup semi-finals six times (2007, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2021, and 2022) — the most by any team. This year’s early exit marks their first group-stage departure since 2016 and only the third in the tournament’s history.
