Pakistan qualify for Hockey World Cup after eight years

EGYPT: Pakistan’s national hockey team booked their place in the 2026 Hockey World Cup, defeating Japan 4-3 in a pulsating semi-final clash to end an eight-year wait for the sport’s marquee event.

The win comes after a solid performance across all quarters, with Pakistan scoring once in the first quarter and adding three more in the fourth to secure the victory.

The upcoming Hockey World Cup is scheduled to be held in Belgium and the Netherlands in August, marking Pakistan’s return to the global stage after missing the 2018 edition.

With this result, Pakistan continues to rebuild its reputation in international hockey, showing resilience and attacking flair that could make them a team to watch in the upcoming tournament.

Ahead of the semi-final against Japan, Pakistan captain Ammad Butt had expressed optimism ahead of his team’s crucial semi-final clash against Japan in the World Cup Hockey Qualifiers, highlighting the squad’s determination to secure a spot in the upcoming Hockey World Cup.

“Pakistan is just one step away from the World Cup. With the team’s high morale, winning the semi-final against Japan is our first goal, and by qualifying, we will give a gift to the nation,” Butt said.

The captain also praised the team’s consistency and support structure: “Three consecutive wins are a testament to the players’ dedication. Thanks to Mohsin Naqvi, the Government of Pakistan, and the world-class facilities provided, the team delivered its best performance.”
