WEB DESK: Pakistan has been re-elected to the Executive Council of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) for the term 2026–2028, the Foreign Office said on Wednesday.
In a statement, the FO spokesperson confirmed that Pakistan secured its place on the council during the 30th session of the Conference of States Parties held in The Hague. The Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), which the OPCW oversees, has 193 member states and is widely regarded as the world’s most successful disarmament treaty.
The OPCW is credited with eliminating an entire category of weapons of mass destruction by ensuring a global ban on the development, production, stockpiling and destruction of chemical weapons. Its Executive Council is the organisation’s principal policymaking body, responsible for monitoring compliance with the convention and ensuring its effective implementation.
The council also supports member states in advancing scientific and economic development tied to peaceful chemical activities.
Pakistan has been a consistent member of the Executive Council since ratifying the CWC in 1997. The FO spokesperson noted that Islamabad has played a “constructive role” in advancing the objectives of the convention and continues to facilitate regular OPCW inspections of relevant national facilities.
The statement reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to global chemical disarmament and its ongoing cooperation with the OPCW’s verification and compliance mechanisms.
