ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has been re-elected to the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC) for the term 2026–2028, securing 169 votes in the 193-member UN General Assembly.

According to the Foreign Office, elections were held earlier today in New York. Among five candidates from the Asia-Pacific region contesting four seats, Pakistan received the highest number of votes.

The Foreign Office said Pakistan’s re-election reflects the international community’s confidence in its strong credentials and constructive role within the global human rights framework.

It added that Pakistan remains committed to upholding, promoting and safeguarding human rights and fundamental freedoms for all, guided by the principles of universality, dialogue and cooperation.

Saudi Arabia fails to win seat on UN Human Rights Council

The statement reaffirmed that Pakistan will continue to advocate for tolerance, inclusivity and respect, while highlighting human rights violations, including those in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), at the international level.

The Human Rights Council is a 47-member intergovernmental body based in Geneva, responsible for the promotion and protection of human rights around the world.
