Pakistan receives $1.2bn from IMF, confirms SBP

KARACHI: Pakistan has received $1.2 billion from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) confirmed on Thursday.

In a statement, the central bank said that the amount was transferred under the Extended Fund Facility (EFF) and the Resilience and Sustainability Facility (RSF).

According to the SBP, the IMF Executive Board, during its meeting on December 8, 2025, completed the second review of the EFF for Pakistan and approved the disbursement of 760 million Special Drawing Rights (SDR).

Additionally, the Board approved the release of 154 million SDR as the first tranche under the RSF.

With these approvals, Pakistan has now received a total of 914 million SDR — equivalent to roughly $1.2 billion — which the IMF disbursed on December 10, 2025.

The central bank said that the inflow will be reflected in its foreign exchange reserves for the week ending December 12, 2025.

The IMF Executive Board had earlier approved the $1.2 billion disbursement for Pakistan under the EFF and RSF arrangements.

Following the Board’s decision, Deputy Managing Director and Acting Chair Nigel Clarke said Pakistan’s reforms under the EFF had helped maintain macroeconomic stability despite multiple recent shocks.

He noted that real GDP growth had accelerated, inflation expectations remained anchored, and fiscal and external imbalances had improved.

He said that Pakistan must continue adhering to prudent policies and accelerate reforms needed to secure stronger, private-sector-led, and sustainable medium-term growth, particularly amid an uncertain global environment.

An IMF mission led by Eva Petrova held discussions for the EFF’s second review and the RSF’s first review between 24 September and October 8, 2025 in Karachi, Islamabad and Washington DC.
