Pakistan slams India over jail sentences for Kashmiri leaders

WEB DESK: In a strongly worded statement, the Foreign Office categorically rejected the life imprisonment handed to Ms Andrabi by a Delhi court.

According to GEO News, her associates, Fehmeeda Sofi and Nahida Nasreen, were also handed rigorous 30-year sentences under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) a piece of legislation frequently described by human rights advocates as “draconian.”

Pakistan maintains that the verdict represents a politically motivated attempt to silence dissent and intimidate those advocating for the self-determination of the Kashmiri people.

A Pattern of Suppression

The Pakistani government highlighted that these convictions are not isolated incidents but part of a broader, systemic campaign to erode civil liberties within Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).

Officials expressed deep-seated concerns regarding the independence of the judicial process and the adherence to international legal standards, suggesting that the shrinking space for political expression is a direct threat to regional stability.

“The sentencing raises serious concerns regarding due process and judicial independence,” a spokesperson remarked, adding that such actions only serve to exacerbate long-standing tensions in South Asia.

Urging global action, Pakistan called upon the United Nations and various international human rights organisations to hold India accountable.

The statement concluded with a reaffirmation of Islamabad’s “unwavering support” for the Kashmiri struggle, citing the necessity of upholding United Nations Security Council resolutions.

As the diplomatic rift widens, the call for a fair trial and the protection of social and political rights remains at the forefront of Pakistan’s foreign policy agenda.
