Pakistan summons Indian diplomat over naval vessel’s alleged EEZ violation

Pakistan has summoned India’s Charge d’Affaires to lodge a strong protest over an Indian Navy vessel’s alleged violation of Pakistan’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), the Foreign Office said on Wednesday.

According to the Foreign Office, an Indian naval vessel moved dangerously close to a Pakistan Navy ship and maneuvered aggressively in Pakistan’s EEZ on September 15, resulting in contact between the two vessels.

The incident occurred as the Pakistan Navy was conducting its biennial Sea Spark-26 exercises in the country’s EEZ.

The exercises began on September 1, while the Foreign Office said the Indian vessel and a helicopter onboard had repeatedly attempted to enter the area of Pakistan Navy’s exercises since September 7.

INS Kolkata makes contact with PNS Hunain

The Foreign Office said the situation escalated on September 15 when INS Kolkata made a dangerous maneuver and came into contact with PNS Hunain.

Pakistan said PNS Hunain attempted to avoid the collision, but contact with the Indian vessel nevertheless occurred.

According to the Foreign Office, INS Kolkata then increased its speed and left the area.

Pakistan described the Indian vessel’s action as “highly provocative” and said the incident could have led to a serious crisis between the two countries.

The Foreign Office said the professional and responsible conduct of the Pakistan Navy helped prevent the situation from escalating further.

Pakistan cites international law, 1991 agreement

Pakistan told the Indian Charge d’Affaires that it strongly rejected the Indian Navy’s alleged provocative action.

The Foreign Office said the maneuver constituted a serious violation of international law and the 1991 bilateral agreement on advance notification of military exercises, maneuvered and troop movements.

Pakistan urged India to strictly adhere to international law and bilateral agreements aimed at preventing untoward incidents at sea.

The Foreign Office said Pakistan’s Charge d’Affaires in New Delhi would also lodge a protest with the Indian Ministry of External Affairs.

Pakistan also called on the international community to urge India to refrain from aggressive and irresponsible actions.

Pakistan urges restraint

The Foreign Office said South Asia could not afford further tensions and instability.

Pakistan urged India to avoid actions that could undermine regional peace and stability and stressed the importance of responsible conduct in maritime areas.

The Foreign Office reiterated Pakistan’s position that adherence to international law and bilateral agreements is essential for maintaining regional peace and preventing incidents at sea.
