Pakistan takes chair of SCO regional counter-terrorism structure

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has officially assumed the chairmanship of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Regional Counter-Terrorism Structure, marking a significant step in the country’s ongoing efforts to combat terrorism on a global scale.

On Friday, a spokesperson for Pakistan’s Foreign Office (FO) highlighted the country’s central role in the fight against terrorism, noting that it is working closely with global partners to strengthen international counter-terrorism initiatives. “Pakistan is playing a frontline role in the fight against terrorism, ensuring that it works collaboratively with allies to address this global challenge,” the spokesperson said.

PM SHARIF MEETS EMIR OF QATAR

The FO spokesperson also said that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met with the Emir of Qatar during a high-level diplomatic visit. The meeting, aimed at reinforcing bilateral ties, saw Pakistan reaffirm its unwavering support for Qatar’s sovereignty and security. “Pakistan stands fully with Qatar, ensuring its continued security and territorial integrity,” the spokesperson added.

Pakistan also expressed profound concern over recent tensions involving Israel and Qatar. In a strongly worded statement, the Foreign Office condemned Israel’s recent attacks on Qatar, expressing deep sorrow over the loss of innocent lives.

“Pakistan deeply regrets Israel’s continued indifference to the situation in the region and reiterates its firm position on standing with the people of Qatar during this difficult time,” the spokesperson added.

The Foreign Office extended heartfelt condolences to the families affected by the attacks, offering sympathy for the loss of precious lives. “In these challenging moments, Pakistan shares in the grief of the Qatari people and remains committed to offering all possible support.”

SCO COMMITTED TO COMBATING TERRORISM, SEPARATISM, EXTREMISM

Earlier in September, the SCO member states reaffirmed their commitment to combating terrorism, separatism and extremism, as they issued Tianjin Declaration after the two-day Council of Heads of States summit.

In this connection, the SCO also called for respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of member states.
