ISLAMABAD: The first supermoon of 2026, commonly known as the Wolf Moon, was witnessed in Pakistan, the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) announced on Saturday..
According to SUPARCO, this supermoon is part of a continuing series, with the first and second supermoons having occurred in October and December 2025, respectively. This celestial event coincides with the peak of the Quadrantid meteor shower, offering skywatchers a rare visual treat.
In Pakistan, the supermoon rose at 5:51 pm. The moon’s illumination will reach approximately 99.8 per cent and will remain visible on January 3 and 4.
Officials further stated that the distance between the Earth and the Moon during this event will be about 362,000 kilometres. As a result, the Moon will appear 6 to 7 per cent larger and nearly 10 per cent brighter than an average full moon.
SUPARCO also noted that the next supermoon is expected to be visible toward the end of the year, in November 2026.
