Pakistan treats critically ill Afghan newborn after allowing entry through Torkham border

ISLAMABAD: A 10-day-old Afghan baby has recovered after Pakistan allowed the newborn and his parents to enter through the Torkham border crossing for emergency medical treatment, officials said on Wednesday.

The infant, who was brought from Jalalabad, was granted permission to enter Pakistan on August 2 on humanitarian grounds after requiring urgent medical care, according to an official statement.

After crossing the border, the baby was immediately transferred to the Frontier Corps Hospital in Hayatabad, where doctors provided specialised treatment and intensive medical care.

The statement said that the child’s condition has improved and he is now out of danger following continuous monitoring by specialist doctors.

It said that the decision to allow the family to enter Pakistan was aimed at ensuring the newborn received timely medical treatment and to save his life.

Pakistan has continued its tradition of providing humanitarian assistance in emergencies and prioritising the protection of human life, the statement added.
