Pakistan has called on the international community to take urgent measures to stop the illegal flow of modern weapons into Afghanistan, warning that failure to act could threaten security across the region.
Speaking at the United Nations, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative Asim Iftikhar Ahmad described the access of terrorist groups in Afghanistan to illegal arms as a serious threat to regional peace. He highlighted that these organisations are operating openly in Afghanistan, posing risks not only to the country itself but also to neighbouring states.
“These groups receive financial and operational support from international sources, which fuels their destructive activities,” Ahmed said. He pointed out that these militants have been using weapons against Pakistani citizens and law enforcement agencies, resulting in the deaths of thousands of innocent Pakistanis.
Ahmed expressed deep concern over the stockpiles of modern weapons and ammunition in Afghanistan, emphasising that their presence could further destabilise the region. He urged the global community to take immediate steps to prevent terrorist groups from gaining access to such arms.
He also called on Afghanistan’s interim authorities to honour their commitments and fully respect their responsibilities to improve law and order within the country. Ahmed stressed the need to modernise the arms control system, advocating the use of advanced technology to curb illegal arms transfers worldwide.
“Gaps in the international response must be addressed to ensure global security,” he added. Pakistan warned that without swift action, terrorist activities could expand and have serious repercussions across the region.
Ahmed concluded by underlining the importance of collective international efforts to find a lasting solution to the issue.
