GÖTEBORG: A researcher originally from Pakistan Sajid Alvi was honoured for his work in the field of sustainable battery at the Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden on Wednesday.
According to the university’s website, the Alvi’s research focused on enhancing the energy density of sodium-ion batteries for stationary storage, with a specific focus on utilising alloy anodes composed of abundant elements.

Alvi’s research garnered recognition from the “King Carl XVI Gustaf’s Foundation for Science, Technology and the Environment” in Sweden that aims to support research and technological development contributing to the sustainable use of natural resources.
Alvi’s work aligns with the foundation’s mission by seeking to create “resilient supply chains” and reduce dependency on countries where critical battery materials are traditionally sourced. This aims to promote sustainability while mitigating environmental impact that traditional batteries cause over its entire lifecycle.
Alvi’s research not only holds promise for advancing battery technology but also has potential implications for addressing energy challenges in regions like Pakistan.
With the ability to withstand extreme cold and be recharged using renewable energy sources, sodium-ion batteries could offer solutions for providing electricity to remote areas, such as the northern areas of Pakistan near Himalayas.
Alvi’s interdisciplinary approach to battery research is helping drive innovation and address complex challenges in sustainable energy storage.
The recognition from the foundation includes a monetary grant, which Alvi plans to utilise for further studies on alloy anode materials for sodium-ion batteries at synchrotron facilities and to attend international battery conferences.
