ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasized the urgent global need to resolve conflicts through dialogue and diplomacy, identifying armed conflict as the primary driver of forced displacement worldwide.

In his message on the World Refugee Day, the prime minister highlighted Pakistan’s unwavering four-decade-long support for Afghan refugees, praising the nation’s exemplary hospitality towards their “Afghan sisters and brothers.”

Prime Minister Sharif underscored that Pakistan has extended Afghan nationals access to its education system, healthcare facilities, and other social sectors.

This access, he stated, reflects Pakistan’s firm commitment to empowering Afghan refugees to contribute meaningfully to their country’s peace and development upon their return.

He further expressed national pride in Afghan nationals who have excelled in various fields, including sports and numerous professions, leveraging the education and training they received while residing in Pakistan.

The prime minister called for renewed global solidarity, equitable burden-sharing, and robust international cooperation to support refugees and facilitate their safe and dignified return to their homes.

He also commended the tireless humanitarian efforts of various organizations, with particular appreciation for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

Pakistan currently hosts over 1.36 million registered Afghan refugees, according to UNHCR data as of May 31, 2025, in addition to a smaller number of refugees and asylum-seekers from other countries.

The government of Pakistan, in collaboration with UNHCR, has been working to provide essential services and opportunities for self-reliance to these populations.

This year’s World Refugee Day theme, “Solidarity with Refugees,” underscores the importance of inclusive health systems and equitable care for refugees globally, a principle Pakistan has aimed to uphold.
