GWADAR: Cargo traffic at Pakistan’s Gwadar Port is picking up pace, with a vessel carrying thousands of tonnes of goods docking at the facility, as officials say improving activity signals renewed confidence among global shipping lines.
A cargo ship, MV Riva Glory, arrived at the port carrying around 11,629 metric tonnes of cargo, Pakistan’s Maritime Affairs Minister Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry said, adding that commercial operations at the port were accelerating.
He said the rise in ship arrivals reflected growing trust of international shipping companies in Gwadar, as the government works to make the port system more efficient and competitive.
The minister said that Gwadar was increasingly emerging as a key transit and transshipment hub in the region, with authorities committed to providing full facilities to investors and shipping firms.
The latest arrival comes amid a broader uptick in activity at the deep-sea port, with officials linking the trend to improved infrastructure, logistics and security arrangements that have reduced turnaround times and enhanced operational readiness.
Gwadar’s strategic location near major global shipping routes connecting South Asia, the Middle East and Central Asia has also made it an attractive alternative for freight operators amid evolving regional dynamics.
In recent weeks, disruptions and tensions in the Gulf — particularly around the Strait of Hormuz — have prompted shipping companies to explore alternative routes, with Pakistan’s ports, including Gwadar, benefiting from the diversion of cargo flows.
Industry stakeholders say the port has begun witnessing increased transshipment activity as a result, although volumes are still developing. They caution that sustained gains will depend on continued policy support, infrastructure upgrades and competitive port charges.
Gwadar is a central component of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), a multi-billion-dollar infrastructure initiative aimed at enhancing regional connectivity and trade. Recent improvements in cargo-handling capacity, logistics systems and security have strengthened its position as an emerging regional trade hub.
Officials say further expansion plans and incentives under the Gwadar Free Zone are expected to attract investment, boost economic activity and solidify the port’s role as a global maritime gateway.
