PDMA alerts eight KP districts over possible glacial lake bursts, flooding risk

WEB DESK: The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued an alert for eight districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa over the risk of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) and possible flooding triggered by glacier melting and heavy rains.

According to the PDMA, Chitral, Upper Dir, Lower Dir, Swat, Upper Kohistan, Lower Kohistan, and Mansehra are among the areas facing potential flood risks due to rising water levels in rivers, streams, and seasonal nullahs.

The authority warned that increased glacier melting combined with rainfall could significantly increase water flow in rivers and waterways, posing threats to nearby communities.

PDMA directed the concerned deputy commissioners to ensure close monitoring of vulnerable locations and establish an effective early warning system to deal with any emergency situation.

The authority also instructed officials to ensure the availability of rescue personnel and equipment in Kohistan, Mansehra, and Swat, while preparations for possible evacuations should be completed in Chitral, Upper Dir, Swat, Kohistan, and Mansehra.

PDMA advised tourists to avoid camping and trekking activities in Chitral, Upper Dir, Swat, and Kohistan during the alert period.

The public has also been urged to stay away from fast-flowing rivers, streams, and rainwater channels to avoid any untoward incidents.
