The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) alert for the upper districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, warning that rising temperatures may accelerate glacier melting until May 31.

According to the PDMA, heavy rainfall is also expected in Chitral, Dir, Swat and Kohistan, increasing the risk of glacial lake outbursts and flash floods in vulnerable areas. The authority has directed district administrations to ensure advance preparations and emergency response measures. Officials have also been instructed to increase monitoring in sensitive locations and keep early warning systems active.

The PDMA said rescue personnel must ensure the availability of machinery and remain prepared for any emergency situation. It warned that flooding in streams and nullahs could sweep away vehicles, particularly in low-lying and mountainous areas.

The authority advised citizens to avoid unnecessary travel and stay away from dangerous locations. It also urged residents in vulnerable areas to move livestock and valuable belongings to safer places as a precaution. All relief agencies have been directed to remain on standby for immediate response.

A PDMA spokesperson said the Emergency Operation Centre is fully functional and citizens have been advised to contact the PDMA helpline at 1700 in case of any emergency.
