WASHINGTON: The Pentagon has disclosed that the ongoing US military operation in Iran has cost an estimated $25 billion so far, marking the first official public breakdown of the conflict’s financial toll.
Acting Pentagon comptroller Jules Hurst told the House Armed Services Committee that most of the expenditure has gone toward munitions, alongside operational costs and equipment replacement linked to the ongoing campaign.
During the hearing, Hurst confirmed that the figure represents current spending on the conflict but did not specify whether it includes long-term costs such as rebuilding damaged infrastructure or replenishing military stockpiles.
Lawmakers pressed the Defense Department for clarity, with top Democrat Adam Smith noting that Congress had been waiting for a formal cost assessment since the start of the war.
The disclosure comes as the US continues military operations in Iran, including the deployment of additional forces and naval assets to the region. The conflict, which began in late February, has already led to casualties among US troops and broader economic impacts, including pressure on global energy markets.
The Pentagon is expected to submit a more detailed supplemental funding request to Congress once a full cost assessment is completed.
