ISLAMABAD: Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) resumed its flight operations to the United Kingdom on Saturday, October 25, marking its return to European skies after a five-year suspension.
The first flight, operated by a Boeing 777, departed from Islamabad to Manchester carrying 284 passengers. The launch was marked by a simple yet graceful ceremony at Islamabad International Airport, attended by Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif, British High Commissioner Jane Marriott, senior officials from the Ministry of Defence, aviation authorities, and members of the diplomatic community.
Ceremonial send-off and renewed hope
Defence Minister Khawaja Asif and British High Commissioner Jane Marriott jointly saw off the inaugural flight. Speaking at the ceremony, the minister said the resumption of direct flights would further strengthen ties between Pakistan and the United Kingdom, home to more than 1.6 million people of Pakistani origin. He added that the restoration of these flights would provide passengers with more comfortable and convenient travel options.
The minister also directed PIA management to improve flight schedules, upgrade cabin services, and take steps to increase the number of flights in the future. During the event, a lucky draw was held in which one passenger won a 660cc car, while others received mobile phones and gift items. Commemorative shields were also presented to distinguished guests by PIA’s Chief Executive Officer, Amir Hayat.
PIA’s return to British skies
In the first phase, PIA will operate two weekly flights between Islamabad and Manchester, on Saturdays and Tuesdays, with plans to expand services to Birmingham and London later.
The airline’s return was made possible after the UK Civil Aviation Authority issued the Foreign Aircraft Operating Permit, the final clearance needed for commercial operations. This approval followed PIA’s receipt of the Third Country Operator certification and ACC3 cargo and security clearances, restoring international confidence in its safety and regulatory standards.
PIA had been barred from flying to the EU, the UK, and the US in June 2020 after a crash in Karachi’s Model Colony claimed nearly 100 lives. The resumption of UK flights marks an important milestone in the airline’s efforts to rebuild its global reputation and reconnect Pakistan with major international destinations.
