ISLAMABAD: In a major development for sci-fi fans, the first two episodes of the science-fiction series Pluribus premiered on Apple TV on November 7, 2025. The show places a mysterious virus at the center of its plot, using it as the driving force behind a global transformation.
Set in Albuquerque, New Mexico, episodes 1 and 2 depict a virus that causes almost the entire world’s population to become blissfully content, collectively optimistic, and effectively part of a single hive-like consciousness.
Amid this strange new reality, the series introduces Carol Sturka, the protagonist of Pluribus. Although a successful romance novelist, Carol is deeply unhappy in her personal life — a trait that unexpectedly makes her one of the very few people immune to the virus.
This immunity places her in a unique and burdensome position: the “most miserable person on Earth by choice,” yet the one tasked with saving humanity from forced happiness.
Pluribus characters and their roles
The series features a strong supporting cast. Karolina Wydra stars as Zosia, a member of the hive-mind who guides Carol through the new world order. Carlos Manuel Vesga appears as Manousos, one of the un-joined survivors who, like Carol, remains unaffected by the virus.
Miriam Shor plays Helen, Carol’s partner and one of the early victims of the outbreak. Samba Schutte takes on the role of Koumba Diabaté, another un-joined survivor who approaches the situation with a more relaxed, carefree attitude.
American screen content producer Vince Gilligan who is serving as the project’s guiding force writes the fiction.
Pluribus themes
The show explores deep thematic questions surrounding identity, happiness (toxic positivity), and what it truly means to be human in a world that believes itself to be “fixed.”
The title — styled PLUR1BUS — draws inspiration from E pluribus unum which in Italina language means one out of many, that reflects on the show’s central concept of individuals merging into a single collective consciousness.
